5 year old ratings and comments
Personally I don't think 5 + year old comments should count. Perhaps leave the comments there but don't use the ratings. So much has changed, including the apartment management AND apartment name. The apartments I live in now are great, it looks like a lot has changed and I'm upset that the ratings are so low.
After looking through the 500+ comments (briefly) the worst ratings were left over 4 or 5 years ago.. Back when the apartments were under a different name and management. Even the look of the apartments have changed since then.
Thanks for the feedback! The new calculation method is now live- % recommended progressively devalues older reviews… zero weight to 4+ year-old reviews.

I think the history is great. People reading can determine if things have changed or been maintained, good or bad. When reading a review people can see the context and understand if the problem is ongoing or an aberration. It is pretty obvious when someone is just pissed off and writing or if there truly is an ongoing issue.

SO UNFAIR, COMMUNITIES ARE RATED WITH IN THE LAST 4 YEARS.... YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT ALL THE GREAT RATING OF THE PAST, BECAUSE ONLY NEW RATINGS COUNT. IT IS VERY EASY FOR A TURNED DOWN AND DISCRUNTLED APPLICANT TO RUIN THE RATINGS OF A GREAT COMMUNITY JUST BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T QUALIFY AND THEY WANT TO GET REVENGE BY POSTING NEGATIVELY. THERE IS NO RECOURSE FOR THE BUSINESS TO PROTECT ITSELF FROM THIS INTERNET SLANDER. A GOOD REPUTATION IS BUILT OVER MANY YEARS, NOT 4. IF YOU ONLY LOOK AT 4 YEARS THEN THE REVENGE POSTERS WHO ARE JUST MALICIOUSLY LYING DESTROY REPUTATIONS OF BUSINESSES THAT TOOK YEARS TO ACQUIRE. THIS SITE SHOULD BE BANNED AND THE OWNERS HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR FAULTY SYSTEM OF RATING.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we have indeed made this change. Without going in depth on the details, new reviews count about 4X more than 4-year old reviews when we calculate % recommended, and 5+ year old reviews stop counting toward the score (unless we only have 5+ year-old reviews). Feel free to email info@aptratings.com if you see any weird in the results.

I agree. I am a manager and have two unfair posts on my site. One is a resident who says he moved out in 1985 and then waited over 20 years until 2004 to enter a rating. The second moved out in 1997 and entered a rating 12 years later in 2004. These type of reviews are not useful to anyone and should be removed.

I find that the apartment complex is very safe for children to play and the staff is very professional. I read some of the reviews and find that the review is unfair and inaccurate. I have lived in different places and have found that generally that the people that cause problems and do not conform to the rules are the source of the problem. In turn these people are the ones that bash the security of others which that makes this neighborhood safe to live in. Being fair and safe is much more important to me than some one that don't pay their rent nor have respect for others whom live side by side. If I had to choose a apartment complex to protect my security , I chose the right apartment complex. People want to live in / at peace today. Being objective, you would want the same for your children and your mother. So I feel that look at the messenger before you look at hte message.

Completely agreed. I hate seeing a recent apartment complex I lived at getting a 54% when the past 3 years of reviews have shown how horrendous this hell hole is.

I agree that there should be a statue of limitations on ratings as properties change staff and residents all the time. This is so we can make sure that we are getting the most updated rating of a community.

This might not be difficult to implement. Each review could be weighted by recency, with more recent reviews contributing more to the final score
